The taste of our land: Harvest 2024.
Bodem Bodegas: Por y para la tierra.
The harvest began on August 26, marking an early start due to the dry and hot weather. These initial conditions allowed for rapid progress in the first few days, favoring the ripening of the grapes. However, ten days after the start, significant rainfall slowed the entry of grapes into the winery and extended the harvest until October 1. This exceptionally long duration posed a logistical and strategic challenge, making it the most extended harvest in the recent history of Bodem Bodegas.
Due to climatic variations, the Bodem Bodegas technical team had to adapt the harvest time of each plot to ensure that each variety reached its maximum fruit expression. This meticulous fieldwork was possible thanks to the close collaboration between the grape growers, the field technician, and the winery workers, who worked together to determine the optimal harvest time, plot by plot. This careful planning was essential to obtaining high-quality grapes, maximizing the aromatic profile and structure of each variety.
Despite efforts, yields were lower than in previous years, averaging less than 3,000 kg/ha. While this reduction in quantity may be significant, it has allowed the team’s resources and attention to focus on obtaining the highest possible quality in each cluster. The results promise a harvest of great aromatic intensity and concentration, which will undoubtedly be reflected in the quality of the wines.
Pagos del Moncayo: Historia artesanal, pasión sostenible.
The 2024 vintage in Pagos del Moncayo, in the DO Campo de Borja, began with a bud break at the end of March. Drought conditions had already affected several seasons, causing uneven development in some areas, especially in vineyards at higher altitudes. During the summer, however, significant improvements were achieved through applying natural fertilizers, pruning, and bunch control, which helped improve the plants’ vigor and health.
Thanks to timely rainfall in the summer, grape ripening was favorable, allowing a harvest mostly during mid-September. This year, with approximately 50,000 kg of grapes and a yield of 3,000 kg/ha, the harvest was hand-harvested, with a significant part of the picking taking place at night to maintain the freshness and health of the fruit.
The Pagos del Moncayo team foresees a special vintage characterized by wines with outstanding structure and fruit expression. This suggests great potential for sustainable and artisanal wines from the winery.
Bodegas Vallobera: Tradición y modernidad.
Harvest at Vallobera this year began on August 26 and ended on October 11, allowing for a staggered harvest to ensure optimal ripening of each plot.
Weather conditions were favorable, with average temperatures of 25°C during the day and 12°C at night, which helped preserve the grapes’ balance and freshness. The average hours of sunshine were lower than in other years, especially in the spring, when the season was drier and more relaxed than usual, resulting in slower grapes ripening.
In terms of production, the average yield was between 3,000 and 4,000 kg per hectare, achieving a total of 954,483 kg of grapes. This lower production has resulted in an optimal concentration of aromatic compounds, which, together with the grapes’ excellent health, bodes well for high-quality wines.
The vintage promises to balance fruit intensity and freshness, respecting the traditional profile of DOCa Rioja wines and highlighting the distinctive quality of Vallobera.
Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra: Personas y terroir.
The 2024 harvest at Bodegas Virgen de la Sierra recorded a total production of 698,000 kg, with an average yield of 3,000 kg per hectare.
This season, the harvest began early for the region, on September 14, and took place in excellent weather conditions, benefiting the grapes’ quality. However, the last part of the harvest was extended until October 23 due to periods of rain that slowed the process of harvesting the last 10% of the grapes.
The winery expects excellent quality red wines with remarkable structure, intense colors, a more pronounced fruit profile than in 2023, and well-balanced acidity. On the other hand, the white wines maintain the consistency of previous vintages, standing out in freshness and elegance.
This vintage reflects an excellent overall quality in the production of red wines, consolidating the reputation of the Virgen de la Sierra winery in the DOP Calatayud.
Lagar de Proventus: Esencia de nuestro origen.
The 2024 vintage at Lagar de Proventus, in the DO Ribera del Duero, has been a year of recovery after several drought-affected seasons. Thanks to favorable spring and summer conditions, the resulting wines are expected to be of good quality, benefiting from moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall.
However, the harvest volume has been lower than in previous years, reaching approximately 170,000 kg of grapes, yielding about 30 hectoliters per hectare. The rains and mild temperatures have influenced the vine cycle, extending ripening and resulting in harvest dates fifteen days later than last year.
These factors have allowed us to obtain grapes in optimal conditions for producing wines that maintain the characteristic expression and balance that distinguish Lagar de Proventus wines.
